I had previously watched a few episodes of the two cartoon series that had aired during the early 90’s, but it wasn’t until my dad downloaded some game collection containing the original Genesis games that I really got into Sonic.
I was formally introduced to Sonic sometime around the summer of 1999. And so, with Sonic Mania coming out pretty soon, I’ve decided to talk about the games I played as a kid that made me a Sonic fan. The success of Sonic inspired the creation of a wave of animal mascot games which attempted to emulate the Sonic series, to varying degrees of success. Even today, twenty-five years later, people still look back fondly on Sonic and what he represented during the height of his popularity.
In the ensuing years, multiple sequels were released, games which are still heralded today as being some of the best games released on the Sega Genesis. The game was a resounding success, transforming the previously struggling Sega into a match for Nintendo itself. On June 23, 1991, a little known video game called Sonic the Hedgehog was released for the Sega Genesis.
